5 reasons to buy an electric bike

Are you wondering if an electric bike is right for you? Consider the following 5 reasons to buy an electric bike. I’d like to make a list below, but there are so many good reasons to buy an electric bike that I can’t stop in it. Reasons to buy an e-bike range from having fun to fitness to…getting to work!

No.1: Electric bikes are so much fun!

Do yourself a favor and go see some people try e-bikes. When they first set off, almost everyone reacted the same way – a moment of surprise, followed by a big smile and sometimes cheers! You can see the exact reaction on people’s faces in this video:

It’s a reaction to suddenly feeling like you have superpowers! Once you’re out riding, you’re free to have fun, explore, and enjoy.

I remember thinking, “I want to know what’s at the bottom of that mountain?” and then deciding I wasn’t going to look for it because then I would have to climb back to that very intimidating hill. With an electric bike, I can ride anywhere I like! This works for everyone, as options like electric trikes and electric backrests mean just about anyone can have fun on an electric bike.

No. 2: Electric bikes enhance health and fitness, even when challenged

You’d think a regular bike would make you healthier than an e-bike — and you’d be right, if you ride a regular bike as much as you do an e-bike. But trust me, the average cyclist doesn’t ride a normal bike like an electric bike. Will I ride my regular bike up a steep hill just to buy a bottle of wine or a loaf of bread? Will I ride it when I haul 50 lbs? Unlikely – I’ll take the bus. Sadly, it won’t make me any healthier. But my e-bike will make me healthier.

And I’m not the only one – the latest research shows that a third of the average bike is used less than 25 times a year, and 46% are only used once or twice a week. However, 30% of e-cyclists use it at least once a day, and a whopping 81% ride it at least once a week. Bottom line, verified by the UK Transport Research Laboratory: e-bikes are used at least twice as often as regular bikes. As we know from the gym machines that are used as clothes dryers in the basements of our great continent, machines only make you fit when you actually use them.

“People travel twice as much on e-bikes (which are regular bikes) as on regular bikes, both in kilometres, trips and as part of total traffic. Owning an e-bike has a particularly strong impact on women. They ride e-bikes much more than men. Men, on the other hand, tend to travel longer after cycling.”

My e-bike allows me to live almost car-free, which is impossible for most people on a regular bike. Most of my daily commute is on an electric bike. So while I’m a strong cyclist and often have a lot of fun on my regular bike, my high level of fitness is mostly due to my e-bike, not my regular bike. The same applies to Maggie. We can even use our e-bikes to go grocery shopping together!

My e-bikes combine pedaling and electric assist, giving you power based on how hard you pedal. The workouts you’ll get on an e-bike like this are good, low-intensity cardio, usually of a long duration. For example, commuting on an electric bike can provide you with 30 to 60 minutes of low-intensity cardio twice a day, 5 days a week—a total of maybe 12 hours of exercise per week. This adds a lot of exercise and calories burned—times you typically do nothing but get older, depressed, stressed, and fat while stuck in the car.

While your e-bike’s motor will help you, you can still get regular, sustained exercise on your e-bike — and all doctors agree that regular, consistent exercise is the key to good cardiovascular, general, and mental health .

And don’t forget that e-bikes make cycling accessible to people with serious health challenges so they can fight the debilitating effects of the disease. Here is an email I received from a 72-year-old man in New Zealand:

“I recently brought an electric bike. What a wonderful invention. After a heart attack, I had five stents in my heart. I’ve had a stroke and bowel cancer. My health is improving every day because I ride every day Bike about 10km. And thank you for your book on electric bikes. Blessings from New Zealand.”

Bottom line: Deciding to buy an e-bike isn’t just a transportation decision—it’s a decision that enriches the quality and length of your life by getting fitter and healthier.

No. 3: You can lose weight by riding an electric bike

Commuting on an electric bike is a great way to lose weight because it burns a lot of calories!

Generally speaking, cycling is a great way to burn calories because you are so focused on the journey and fun that you can easily spend hours working out.

You’re burning a lot of calories on an e-bike because, despite your help, you’re also moving a heavier bike. It’s not exactly balanced, but you can be sure you’ll burn at least two-thirds the calories on an e-bike.

Here’s this calculator to help you figure out how many calories you burn in an hour on an electric bike, cycling at an easy pace:

Start with your weight in pounds, e.g. 250 pounds
Divide it by 2.2 to get your weight in kg, in this case 113.6 kg
Multiplying 113.6 by 6 gives 632 calories per hour on a regular bike
Multiply 632 by 66% for electric bike help
… equals 417 calories burned in 1 hour
So if you weigh 250 pounds and spend 2 hours commuting on an electric bike 5 days a week, you’ll burn an extra 4,170 calories per week. If you do this 49 weeks per year (accounting for 3 weeks of vacation), you’ll burn an extra 204,330 calories per year. You have to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound – which means switching from a car to an e-bike could potentially lose about 58 pounds in a year. Not to mention, even if you park your e-bike in the garage, you’ll continue to burn more calories because you’ve already cranked up your metabolism by cycling.

Many people have proven this with their own experience. And I’ve been trying my whole life not to get fat. However, my body has tried its best to stay fat. In that battle, I never managed to turn things around—until a decade ago, when I started riding an e-bike for most of my commute. How did e-bikes turn things around? In short, it keeps me working out. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made up my mind to go to the gym five times a week, or swim twice a week, or get back to playing football. Usually it happens for a few weeks and then…stops. On the other hand, now that I’ve decided to commute on an electric bike, movement inevitably happens. I have to go to work, and once I get there, I have to go back.

Thanks to my e-bike, I’ve lost 60 pounds now, and my wife actually called my body “tough” the other day. Wow – I never thought I’d hear the word “wiry” applied to me!

No. 4: Faster travel – e-bikes are faster than cars!

Here’s one of my favorite fun facts: While modern cars can be 50 times faster than the cars of the early 20th century, the average car speed in traffic hasn’t increased at all. I think it’s kind of funny. The reason is obvious to anyone who’s ever been caught in a traffic jam: having a car capable of going 200 mph doesn’t help if you have 50,000 congested cars in front of you managing a deadly ten mph .

On your e-bike, you’ll be able to ride faster than the average cyclist, but still use bike routes that cars and motorcycles can’t. Therefore, you will most likely find an e-bike to be the fastest way to get to work.

Personally, I’ve never done a single commute on my e-bike, and at some point I haven’t sped past like a stationary car. Usually I pass hundreds of nearly stationary cars. Every time I drive past a car, I think about how much I hate driving: being locked in a tin can, getting mad at other drivers, making them mad at me. As I was forced to drive, I found myself staring thoughtfully at the cyclists whizzing past me, apparently full of pleasure and exercise-induced endorphins, and found myself seriously questioning one of the Basic myth: The car represents the concept of convenience and freedom.

As I jog through the traffic jam, all I can think about is, “What kind of convenience and freedom is this?”

No. 5: No Sweat – Electric Bikes Make Bicycle Commuting Possible, Even for Those Who Have Difficulty Commuting

Sweating is a significant issue if you bike to work, and most people don’t have enough luck getting a shower in the office. People sweat less on e-bikes because they don’t have to pedal as hard, and higher speeds mean more wind to keep you cool. I love this story, told by a committed cyclist who tried an e-bike a little reluctantly:

“After my first long commute, I changed my mind about electric bikes. I installed HOTELBIKE’s top-paced electric bikes in leafy Brooklyn and was skeptical of the battery-powered bike proposition. After all, riding Cyclists exercise on bikes. This seems to be cheating.

Seven miles later, when I got to Times Square, it dawned on me. Strictly speaking, e-bikes have nothing to do with sports. It’s about commuting. The bike’s electric motor helped me climb the Brooklyn Bridge and up a long incline from the Hudson River to the center of traffic-heavy Manhattan. The HOTEBIKE transforms the usually sweaty bike commute into a delightful, energizing spin. In fact, I’ve given up cycling to work because it leaves me soaking wet and not having a shower at work is a no-brainer. Electric bikes make bike commuting possible again. “
