What are the numbers?

From 2006 to 2012, the establishment of the electric bicycle industry in the United States did not cause much repercussions. It’s still relatively small in number and very, very niche – but full of promising potential.

During this period, it accounted for less than 1% of the bikes sold each year. But when lithium-ion batteries started to become safer, more convenient, and more readily available, the e-bike industry gained more traction in the bicycle space. Over the next few years, between 150,000 and 200,000 bikes were sold in the U.S. and about 1.8 million in Europe. According to Deloitte’s technology forecast, 130 million electric bikes are expected to be sold globally between 2020 and 2023, more than 100 times the number sold over the past decade. This trend is growing exponentially every year and is shockingly unstoppable!

However, e-bikes are only seen as a secondary option when it comes to transportation, as some people still prefer a car, possibly an electric one, like a Tesla or BMW; or a regular gasoline-powered one. E-bikes are only seen as a ride to enjoy on sunny or cloudy days, where everything is relaxing and picturesque, and when you have all the time in the world rather than a productive day-to-day in the rush. Right now, that’s how people think about e-bikes, but in the next few years, people will surely realize the true value and benefits of using an e-bike. 

That’s why if you look at the same forecast from Deloitte, 40 million e-bikes will be sold every year starting in 2023. A number of factors influence this forecast, including the choice of people to switch to healthier, greener lifestyles, not to mention the growing prevalence of bike-friendly cities that reallocate space for bikes. That’s good news, because e-bikes are really making the world a healthier place.

Regarding the same study, it can be assumed that more and more people will choose e-bikes over cars. Because over time, more and more technologies are developed to make electric bicycles safer, such as the invention of wearable airbags, advanced helmets, etc. In fact, there are a wide variety of e-bikes on the market today that will definitely suit your style and intended use, so you dont have to worry about limited options.

In its 2019 Global Electric Vehicle Outlook, the International Energy Agency forecasts that by 2025, only 12 million electric cars and trucks will be sold and occupy driveways. 

This number is far less than the number of electric bikes expected to be sold in the future. The study not only predicts the sales of electric vehicles in the next few years, but also publicly predicts the potential potential of electric bikes in ride-sharing services like we currently have in ride-hailing services for regular fuel-powered vehicles. Two types of pedal sensors are torque sensors and cadence sensors. Essentially, the former adjusts based on how hard you pedal, while the latter depends on how fast you pedal.
