Keep Your SHUANGYE E-Bike Batteries Safe

To get the best out of your E-Bike batteries it is important to know how to look after it. Charging and care are the two most important factors when looking at the life and service of a battery.

At Shuangye Ebike we use Great electric system and Lithium-ion batteries for our bikes.

All of our batteries are certified to CE. This is a worldwide legal requirement for battery safety and charger compatibility.

BATTERY INFORMATION CASE

The battery cases come in several different styles. The battery can either be “hidden” or disguised on the bike, or fitted to the frame or rack. However, the internal cells and battery management system is the same, just packaged in a slightly different way.

PERFORMANCE

There are a number of factors that affect the performance and hence the range of your electric bike. Terrain, riding pattern, tyre pressure, user weight and temperature all play a part. Time is a factor too, all batteries deteriorate with time, whether in use or not.

Obviously, if the terrain is hilly, you are likely to use more power. Also, the surface you are riding on can make a difference. A smooth tarmacked surface takes less effort. A softer surface, such as sand, or a loose substance like gravel takes more effort. Keeping tyres pumped up makes a big difference because soft tyres have more rolling resistance and drag. Tyres pumped to the correct pressure will give you more miles from your battery.

In general terms: If you are somewhere where it would be hard work to ride an ordinary bicycle, then it will probably use more from the battery on your electric bike than easier conditions.

ELECTRIC BIKE BATTERY CHARGING

All of the battery types are easily removed for indoor charging. Charging works the same way as when you charge your mobile phone or laptop. Each bike is supplied with a charger and a flat battery is fully charged in 4 to 6 hours. In addition, the batteries can be charged on or off the bikes.

The electric bike battery does not have to be completely discharged before it is recharged. A Lithium battery has no “memory” and therefore can be charged at any time. It is perfectly acceptable to recharge the battery after a short ride so that the battery is fully charged before the next ride.

IMPORTANT CHARGING INFORMATION

Lithium batteries (and indeed any type of rechargeable battery) do not like to be left discharged. It is good practice to recharge as soon as is reasonably possible after the battery goes flat. We recommend charging after every ride, that way your electric bike is always ready for your next outing.

  • Do not charge at temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F)
  • Switch off the battery before charging. (If the battery has a switch on it).
  • Battery can be charged on or off the bike.
  • Always make sure the battery and charger are on a non-flammable, dry surface away from sources of heat, humidity and flammable materials.
  • Do not cover the battery or charger whilst charging.
  • Only use the charger supplied.
  • Even if not in use, recharge your battery a minimum of once a month.

IMPORTANT STORAGE INFORMATION

Batteries do not like to be stored in very hot or very cold conditions, or to be subject to conditions of high moisture. They also do not like to be left in a fully discharged state. If Lithium batteries are left flat for an extended period they may no longer be functional.

Store your battery between 15 °C (59 °F) and 25 °C (77 °F) in a dry area. (The conditions found in a normal domestic house).

If your Shuangye ebike battery is not in use for an extended period it is imperative that you charge the battery before storage and then charge the battery once a month to prevent deterioration.

BATTERY CARE

The electric bike battery supplied with your SHUANGYE will be delivered from the factory in a state of sleep. The first time you use the battery it requires activation by being fully charged. (The SHUANGYE Official Stockist may already have done this for you when you bought the bike – please check)

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

DO NOT:

  • Dismantle
  • Pierce or crush
  • Immerse in liquid
  • Expose to temperatures over 60 °C (140 °F)
  • Short circuit the battery connections
  • Leave unattended whilst charging
  • Sleep near a battery that is charging

IN ADDITION

Keep battery away from children

CHARGER CARE

Plug the charger into the battery before switching on at the mains.

Similarly, switch off at the mains before unplugging the charger from the battery.

Do not leave charger permanently connected.

What is the battery life on an electric bike?

An electric bike battery will typically be warrantied for up to two years, but that’s not to say your battery won’t last longer. Typically, an electric bike battery should last up to 500 charge cycles, or around 2-4 years.

Can I charge my electric bike from the cigarette lighter in my car or motor home?

Yes, you can charge your e-bike from a cigarette lighter using an inverter. Check that the output voltage of your inverter is safe to use with your e-bike charger and don’t forget to keep your engine running – you don’t want to flatten your car battery.

Can I clean my electric bike battery?

Yes, absolutely. Cleaning your electric bike battery can be done at the same time as you clean your bike. Just be careful not to submerge it in water, and don’t use a pressure washer on it. Click here to read our general bike cleaning guide.

You can clean the electrical contacts on the battery & frame gently with a soft cloth. If you ride the bike in salty, wet & wintery conditions, it is good practice to wipe a very thin smear of grease over the contacts to ensure they don’t corrode at all.

How to take care of an electric bike battery?

Caring for your electric bike battery couldn’t be easier. Most electric bikes use Lithium based batteries – the same tech as your mobile phone or laptop. There’s no need to completely discharge the battery regularly. Just like your phone you can plug in your e-bike battery and top it up whenever you like.

Can I charge my electric bike overnight?

Yes, you can leave your electric bike battery charging overnight. There’s no need to worry about overcharging or over-draining your e-bike battery. All the well-known brands of e-bike components (Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano, Specialized, Giant etc) use batteries with sophisticated ‘Battery Management Systems’ built into them. These clever devices prevent the battery from being overcharged, or drained too low.

I want to put my electric bike into storage. What should I do with the battery?

If you’re putting your bike away in storage for a while (during the winter months for example) it is recommended that you leave your battery charged to 60%, or somewhere around half full. Use the on-board battery charge indicator (either on the battery itself or on the heads up display) to see how much juice is in there.

E-Bike Battery Safety Tips

  • Do not leave a charging e-bike battery unattended or on the charger overnight.
  • Do not use or attempt to charge a damaged or malfunctioning e-bike battery.
  • Only charge your e-bike battery with the charger provided by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use aftermarket, low-cost, counterfeit, or refurbished e-bike batteries.
  • If possible, store your e-bike battery in a fire-resistant cabinet or container when not in use.
  • Store damaged e-bike batteries outside and contact your local fire department to ask about safe disposal.
  • And of course, have a fire extinguisher on hand at all times.

BATTERY DISPOSAL

Disposal of batteries

All batteries should be disposed of responsibly. Your SHUANGYE Lithium battery is no different.

You may return your battery to SHUANGYE for disposal.

As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2008, SHUANGYE produce Lithium-Ion batteries. We are obliged to take back free of charge, waste industrial batteries supplied to an end user for treatment and recycling.

We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new industrial batteries on the market. If any of our customers or in certain cases other end users, require us to take back Industrial batteries, they should contact us at sy@zhsydz.com. We will agree the necessary arrangements for the return, proper treatment and recycling of the waste industrial batteries.
