Where is the electric bicycle controller

Where is the electric bicycle controller

Like any useful technology, parts often wear out and need to be replaced. This is no different from an electric bicycle. Therefore, if you need to add a new controller to the electric bicycle, or are doing a complete modification of the electric bicycle, then you need to find out the location of the new controller.

The best location for an electric bicycle controller is a place that is waterproof and weather-proof, does not become too hot, and does not hinder stepping on or sitting on the electric bicycle.

Read below to understand the location of your electric bike controller and what you need to know about how the controller works before selecting and installing the controller.

What is the function of the electric bicycle controller?

The electric bicycle controller acts as a pedal to assist the brain of the bicycle. It coordinates all electronic activities of the bicycle.

Therefore, it is helpful to understand how important it is to the way your electric bike works.

How does the controller work?

Generally speaking, the controller gets information from the battery, motor, accelerator and pedal assist system, and then returns the correct signal to your electronic component system.

For example, if you throttle an electric bicycle, the controller will collect information from the action and tell the motor how much power to provide. Therefore, when you turn the throttle, your electric bike will move forward.

This is what the controller usually looks like. You can see all the different wires that will connect to the various functions of the electric bike.

Controller display

The controller is also connected to a display to display battery power, speed, and pedal assist level.

If the controller is working properly, you can simply check the controller display to see your riding output. This will help you understand when to charge the battery, whether you can change gears for help, and your driving speed.

Where is the controller on the electric bike?

In many newer electric bicycles, the controller is located on the frame near the battery.

However, if you are modifying an electric bicycle, the controller can be placed in several different places. However, the controller display is usually located in the middle of the handlebar for easy viewing.

Where to install the new controller

Battery pack
Buy a bag to cover your battery and put the controller in the bag. Use a piece of foam between the two to prevent the controller from overheating due to the battery.

Sitting on the battery
I recommend still using the foam separator, even if it is not in the battery pack.

In the controller box
This safely accommodates the wires and looks better than a silver metal controller. You can install the box directly on the frame. Install it on the seatpost under the seat or in the lower part of the frame in front of or behind the battery.

Mount directly to the frame
If you don’t think you need to use the controller box, you can install it directly on the frame in the same location as above. Basically, you can install the controller anywhere on the frame so that it won’t get in the way when you ride.

How to choose an electric bike controller (hints to follow):

Before buying a controller, the first thing you need to know is what type of controller you want, sine wave or square wave.

The sine wave controller will be quieter, smoother, and have higher motor efficiency.

The square wave controller will work with multiple motors, use the power supply voltage more efficiently, and better braking and sudden acceleration.

Although the square wave controller is noisier, it is also cheaper than the sine wave controller.

Here are some other important tips for you to keep in mind when choosing.

For electric bike modification:
1. First, get a controller (usually 24V, 36V or 48V) with a voltage that matches your bicycle battery and motor.
2. Buy batteries and controllers that match both amps and volts, so you won’t get stuck in the conversion process.
3. Make sure that the controller you choose is compatible with your motor power.
4. The maximum output current of your battery needs to be higher than that of the controller (usually 18A, 25A or 35A).
5. Find out if your motor has a Hall sensor. If so, then your controller will need to manage the Hall sensor, usually via Hall sensor or dual-mode compatibility.

Replace the controller on the old electric bike

1. Obtain a new controller that matches the voltage of the controller installed on the electric bicycle by the manufacturer.
2. Compare the price and quality of replacing the controller of the same brand… You will be sure that it meets the correct specifications.
3. Buy a car with an LCD display… It is worthwhile to be able to clearly see the battery level and understand your riding speed, especially when you plan to use it for exercise and fitness.

How to connect an electric bike controller

Generally, you should follow the diagram that comes with the controller. However, the wire type, color, and number may be different from what is currently included on your electric bike, especially if you have an advanced controller with a display.

If you want to change the controller, your electric bicycle will determine how many wires are needed based on the characteristics of the bicycle. For example, if you have additional functions such as LED headlights (this one from Amazon) or reverse functions, then you will need more wires to connect them.

Controller location

To determine the best location to connect the controller to the electric bike, test various possible locations (as listed earlier in this article). Make sure you can go up and down the electric bike and pedals freely without touching the controller.

You can test each position by placing the controller at the test point and wrapping it with a tie or Velcro.

You can package the controller in the controller box to easily ensure that the controller is waterproof. Then just install the box on the frame of the bicycle.

Advanced controller with display

Generally, more wires can be found in controllers with high-quality LCD displays.

Also, if you buy a controller with an LCD display, you can put the display on the handlebar, right in the middle, and you can easily check the speed and remaining battery power.

Also, keep in mind that if your electric bike or conversion kit does not have as many electronic features, you may have additional wires that cannot be connected to anything.

Use conversion kit

Of course, if you are considering retrofitting an electric bike, you only need to buy a complete kit. Then you will know that your controller will perfectly match your motor.

Conversion kit options

You can get a complete conversion kit, but you need to make sure you know what you want (and you can do it yourself)!

Make sure you research the different types of conversion kits and first understand what is involved.

There are two main types of conversion kits:

1. Standard: mid-drive motor kit and hidden conversion kit

These are installed in the lower part of the frame and centered, which will provide you with a balanced ride and a smooth ride. And, if it is a hidden kit, you will hardly notice that it is there, which makes your electric bike look very stylish.

If you are a semi-professional rider or value the quality of each ride, you may want to choose this type of electric bike kit.

2. All-in-one electric wheel kit

These are popular, easy-to-install kits, just replace the wheels of the bicycle with wheels that contain a hub motor and electric gears.

If you are a casual rider or beginner, this may be the type of conversion kit you want to install.

Like any electronic component, your electric bike controller is one of the first components that can be damaged. Therefore, you should consider the service life of the electric bike controller and the cost of purchasing a new controller.

On average, electric bike controllers can last at least 3-4 years, just like batteries and motors. You can use a multimeter to test the voltage across the terminal to determine whether the controller needs to be replaced.

Watch out for faults in the controller. These faults are marked by flashing lights or clicks from inside the motor unit-these may indicate a problem with the system. In this case, before considering purchasing a new product, first take advantage of any remaining warranty provided by most companies.
