Bicycle tire selection guide

Bicycle tire selection guide

Are you a lone road traveler? Or an off-road rider on the mountain? Or a beginner who occasionally participates in cycling? Faced with different riding styles, you need to learn to choose different types of electric bicycles. Similarly, choosing the right tire is one of the essential skills you need. In addition to knowing what size tires you need for your vehicle, there are also many types of tires.

No matter what type of rider you are, it is very necessary to avoid excessive tire wear. A flat tire will increase the probability of a tire blowout during riding. Check the tire wear in time and replace the severely worn tire in time. Will effectively enhance your riding experience.

Tyre specifications-diameter and width

How to know your tire specifications? Very simple, look at the sidewall of the tire.

Electric mountain bike: On the tire of the mountain bike, you will see a 27.5×2.0 word, which means the tire width (2.0 inches) and wheel diameter (27.5). Generally speaking, the tire width of an ordinary mountain bike is between 1.9 and 2.25. The tire widths of BMX and all-terrain mountain bikes are between 2.25~2.4, and of course there are wider tires. DH bicycles are equipped with tires up to 2.5 inches wide.

Road bike: On the tires of road bikes, the numbers you see are different from those of mountain bikes, such as 700×23. The first number (700) represents the wheel diameter of the wheel, which is measured in millimeters. The second number (23) represents the actual tire width, also in millimeters.

You may often see 700c written on the tires of road cars. What does the letter c at the end mean? In the past, in French standards, they used the three letters a, b, and c to identify different rim diameters. Nowadays, any 700-size tires are basically the same as the 700c tires in the past. You may have seen 650b, which is the same size as the current 27.5-inch mountain bike tires, and 650c, whose inner diameter is slightly smaller than the 650b tires. Find tires of this size on road bikes.

Most road cars now use 700c tires with widths ranging from 18 to 23 mm. Those who ride station wagons usually choose tires with a width of 25 to 28 mm to improve stability and comfort.

Generally, the size of any 700 tires today is basically the same as the old 700c tires. You can see 650b, which is the same as today’s 27.5″ mountain bike tires, and 650c, which has a slightly smaller inner diameter than 650b tires, and can be found on several road bikes.

Bicycle tire

Off-road vehicle: It has a similar texture to that of mountain off-road tires, but it will be designed to a size of 700 to ensure that the tires can adapt to the shape of the frame.

29ers: Compared with cross-country roads, 29-inch mountain bike tires have a wider tire width and more pattern changes, but generally look no different from ordinary mountain bike tires. The 29-inch tire design concept is to reduce rolling resistance on technical road sections and muddy sand roads. Due to the increased contact surface with the road surface, it is more conducive to control the vehicle when turning and climbing when using a 29-inch mountain bike.

BMX: The tire diameter is usually 20 inches

The diameter of the tire is determined by your car model (the diameter of the rim). It is a very simple “black or white” problem, and most people will not understand it. In contrast, another parameter of tire specifications-tire width, has more knowledge. Under the premise that other conditions remain the same, just the difference in tire width can greatly change the riding experience. We will not expand on this topic for now.

Light tires: generally designed for road bikes, city/commuter bikes, station wagons and some mountain bikes. The smooth tread has almost no pattern, which can bring less rolling resistance. The smooth surface is designed for smooth roads, such as oil parking roads, clean and level roads, which will make you ride faster and easier. Some light tires have grooves on the sides to improve the grip when turning, especially when you ride on roads that have been soaked in water.

Semi-gloss tires: Compared with all-gloss tires, this type of tire is designed with rubber blocks on the sides. The smooth tread in the center of the tire reduces the rolling resistance of the tire while facilitating acceleration. The side tooth blocks are further improved. The grip for turning. Such tires are generally used on light off-road roads.

Shallow gear tire: The shallow gear tire pattern takes into account low rolling resistance and grip. Such a pattern design can adapt to a variety of riding scenarios and is one of the most suitable tires for beginners.

Gear tires: According to different off-road roads, gear tires also have different options. The smaller tooth block can reduce the rolling resistance and is suitable for relatively smooth light off-road roads. Large-toothed tires can provide better grip when there are many tree roots around and when passing through rocky roads. A tire with a larger tooth spacing is suitable for rain battles. It can better help you to drain the mud stuck on the tire. Tires covered with mud can easily lead to sideslip and crashes. Choosing wider tires on off-road roads can help you better control the car.

Tread selection of front and rear tires

Through the different combinations of front and rear tires, you can bring you more different riding experience. For mountain bikes, the front tires are mainly used to provide better grip when turning to improve handling, while the rear tires tend to provide the best power transmission. After purchasing the tire, please install the tire correctly according to the rolling direction of the wheel. The rolling direction is usually marked on the sidewall of the tire.

Compared with mountain bikes, road tires are usually sold in pairs, so there is almost no distinction between front and rear tires, and because the riding scene of road bikes is not as varied as mountain bikes, you can hardly see road tires. There are too many changes in the tread pattern.

Choice of gas nozzle

As we all know, there are generally two types of air nozzles for bicycle inner tubes, presta valve and schrader valve.

In recent years, the tubeless tyre has become more and more respected by everyone, and even appeared on the World Tour. In the past, tubeless tires were mostly used for mountain bikes. The combination of tubeless tires and vacuum wheels can further reduce the weight, and due to the filling of tire repair fluid, minor damages can basically be ignored during riding.

Rivet tire

Such tires usually add cemented carbide rivets to the tread to improve the grip when riding on snow and ice.

Puncture-proof tire

The problem of flat tires will always accompany you throughout your riding career, and tire manufacturers have also come up with corresponding solutions. Add a layer of anti-stab material (usually Kevlar braid) to the tire to prevent the tire from being punctured by sharp objects. Some manufacturers will increase the thickness of the tire, but this often results in a very heavy tire.

Composite rubber tire

Generally speaking, bicycle tires use one type of rubber. The soft rubber tire can bring a more comfortable riding experience, but it is not wear-resistant and the price is high. Hard rubber tires are very durable, but because they are too hard, they will give the rider a less comfortable riding experience. Some high-end players will use a tire made of composite rubber, which is made of rubber of different hardness, which improves riding comfort while taking into account the grip.

The tpi value of a bicycle tire refers to the number of linings per inch of tire length, that is, the serif density. The higher the TPI value, it means that the weight of the tire can be lighter, higher elasticity and comfort, and lower sliding resistance can be obtained. Common bicycle tires range from 30tpi to 120tpi. The most intuitive difference between them is weight and thickness. 30tpi tires are thick and heavy, 60tpi tires are lighter and thinner than 30tpi tires, and 120tpi tires are much lighter and thinner than 30tpi tires. The price will increase a lot while being thin and light. High TPI number means lower rolling resistance. Most of the rolling resistance of tires is caused by rubber deformation. Because the high TPI number jacket contains less rubber, it can convert more of the rider’s energy into forward power.schrader valveschrader valve.
